Appletree Garden Festival 2014

This is a very special post. About a festival for which Moriarty & I bought tickets a year ago and for which we travel over 1600km: Appletree Garden Festival! A festival in the middle of a forest, in a small village in northern Germany with just 16,000 inhabitants, called Diepholz.

[play&read]

__It is normal if you haven't heard about his village before. The closest known city around is  Bremen, less than 70km away. My friend Sarah is from there, and neither she had heard of Diepholz before :) However, once you visit it, and above all, know their people, you can't forget this little town. Diepholz is a town that throw themself into the festival and into the 4500 people attending every year.

... after making her run for 10 minutes...
Tickets are sold out months before the festival, even without having revealed the line-up! New talents dominate this line up based mostly on electro-pop and indie-rock.The festival lasts three days and includes free entry to the campsite (although we decided to stay at a B&B in the next village: Heede). Coming from so far away, the camping option was a bit complicated. On the other hand, after two days of flood, we were happy with our decision :D

Before the rain

After the rain

Yes, it rained for two days, almost uninterrupted. Grounds and campsite became a huge mud that flooded tents, bathrooms and cars. And here lies the greatness of the people attending this festival: nobody ranted and complained about anything, but helped each other and continued enjoying the festival.

Ωracles

Wellies and raincoats became the most desired objects in the village, where sold stocks! It was amazing to see the small town flooded with muddy campers seeking protection for continuing the festival!

Another curious detail is that the campsite doesn't have showers. To solve this, the village allows free access to the swimming pool to all festival goers. Not only that, but it sets a shuttle
tourist train from campsite to the pool!

The festival is also very environmentally conscious (like most things in Germany!) and uses green energy, shared transport and bicycle loan among other things. It also has a delicious homemade food at all food stalls.
