Route 61: New Orleans

Hello! After weeks of silence, I return with lots of content of my last trip, a trip I dreamed for years: the Deep South. As a great reader of Anne Rice, I've always wanted to visit New Orleans. And, as a lover of American Country music, Nashville. So, I decided to organize a road trip through highway 61, a route across the history of American music that connects New Orleans with Nashville, from jazz to country to blues. We visited the states of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Tennessee (Alabama just because we wanted so much). Today's post is about New Orleans.

Hola!

Our trip:
New Orleans (3 days)
Natchez (1 day)
Vicksburg - Jackson (1 day)
Tuscaloosa - Birmingham (2 days)
Oxford - Clarskdale (1 day)
Tupelo - Memphis (2 days)
Nashville (2 days)

At the mouth of the mythical Mississippi River rises the city of New Orleans, also known as Nola. Its European heritage and its many influences (African, Latin American, Spanish, French, etc.)  have shaped this special multicultural character that makes it unique and so different from American standards. Music and spirituality are lived very intensely here, because New Orleans has much to say about spirituality, vampirism and voodoo.

What to see:
The French Quarter is the traditional neighborhood, founded by French settlers. It is the heart of the city and, obviously, the most famous neighborhood. Even Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have a home here. Characteristics are its traditional two-storey houses with wrought iron balconies. The musicians are everywhere and we were lucky to enjoy the annual French Quarter Festival with its main stage at Jackson Square (another key point to visit) and from where the classic Mississippi boats bound for Natchez.

Bourbon Street is certainly its most famous street, though I was a bit disappointed. The neighborhood has become a breeding ground for drunks and vulgar souvenirs with reminiscent of Benidorm or Lloret. During the day it is more pleasant to walk, but at night has no interest except to check the dramatic change of people and lightning with thousands burning neons. In fact, is better to enjoy good music at Frenchman st.

Marigny and Bywatter
Nestled just down river (east) from the French Quarter are these two neighborhoods. Two of New Orleans' most distinct and well-kept secrets. Vibrant architecture line the streets of these neighborhoods. From quaint shotguns and colorful Creole cottages, to Italianate mansions, American townhomes and storefront renovations. You can peruse antique shops and bookstores, opt for food from Creole to vegetarian or visit the gardens of Washington Square Park.

A trip into the Marigny is not complete without a visit to the famed Frenchmen Street, known as the local's version of Bourbon Street, and a must-visit destination for nightlife with many clubs with live music. Spend the afternoon at Crescent Park (Bywatter) for some views of downtown New Orleans and the Mississippi River.

Marigny y Bywatter

Algiers Point
It is a short ferry ride from the foot of Canal Street in busy downtown New Orleans to Algiers Point, but the transition is dramatic. Algiers Point is New Orleans’ Brooklyn without the bustle - the neighborhood has great views of both the city skyline and the Mississippi River. Only if you have time left.

Algiers Point

Garden District
This is a must-visit place. I loved it! Tradition, opulence and beauty can all be used to describe New Orleans' historic Garden District. With its well-preserved collection of antebellum mansions, pristine gardens and southern charm. Best way to arrive here is with the charming St. Charles streetcar. Here you can check different tours by foot. Don't miss Magazine St where you will find amazing stores, delicious traditional restaurants and, of course, Anne Rice's former house (Chestnut/First) and the intersection of Prytania Street and Washington Avenue. Here, in the heart of the neighborhood, you will find a pocket with shopping, cafes and the historic Lafayette Cemetery (where some scenes from Interview with the Vampire where filmed).

Garden District
Es una visita obligatoria. ¡Me encantó!

Practical information:

Accommodation
New Orleans accommodation is quite expensive. Book early and look at Airbnb. We stayed at India House Hostel, in a double room with private bathroom. The rooms are not very clean, but the atmosphere is nice, has a pool and is well connected to the center by tram.

Transport
A single ticket costs just over $1 and you can buy an unlimited day pass for $3 and use both buses and trams. From the airport there is a bus to the center that costs $2. We took an Uber (which just the day we arrived had authorized access to the airport!) that costed us $33 to the hostel).

Food
certainly Nola is the city with more variety in food of our entire trip. Don't forget to try the rice with red beans, fried Catfish, Jambala, Po' boys and the delicious beignets from Cafe du Monde. I recommend the Joey K's Restaurant at Magazine St. and, If you're hosted at India House, the Po-Boys from Parkway Bakery & Tavern. If not, the ones from Domilise's. There is also a super authentic breakfast spot near India House: Betsy's Pancake House. Otherwise District Donuts on Magazine St. In this blog you can also find lots of info.

Información práctica:

Alojamiento

Happy weekend and don't hesitate to ask me any doubts or information you may need!
Feliz finde y podéis preguntadme cualquier cosa que necesitéis saber. A nosotros nos costó encontrar información.
