Le Panier

Another charming district  is Le Panier, the most ancient area of the city. In Greek Marseille (Massilia) it was the site of the agora (marketplace), hence its name, which means ‘the basket’.

Built on the site of the ancient Greek Massalia, the Panier is a typically Mediterranean district with colour-washed facades. The historic refuge of seafarers and generations of immigrants, the Panier is a peaceful haven, still working-class.

Le Panier becomes a popular neighborhood in the 17th century,  when the Marseilles bourgeoisie decided to settle in the new districts designed by Colbert. In the 19th century, the neighborhood acquires gradually its bad reputation and is regarded as an obstacle to the development and modernization of Marseille. However, this overcrowded and rundown district develops its own lifestyle linked essentially to the sea. Feature that ,even today, can be seen in its buildings, its colors and in the personality of its streets and squares.

As you can see, this area of the city is not lacking of urban creativity. It is different from the urban art of Cours Ju ', in Le Panier is cleaner, more integrated into the environment, more discreet and more committed.

One of the most representative buildings of this district is the old Charité. It was built between 1671 and 1749 in the Baroque style to the designs of the architect Pierre Puget. Its function was to accommodate beggars, poor and sick people inside. In 1905 the building was occupied by the army and later became a shelter for the destitute. After the Second World War the architect Le Corbusier was struck by the building and called attention to its abandoned state. It had been scheduled for demolition but finally became a National Heritage building in 1951. Now it is a cultural center, housing different museums.
