Taipei's best areas and surroundings (Jiufen)

Today I explain you more plans to explore Taipei and its surroundings. Today's post is not a route to perform in a day as it's written, but to combine it with the plans of my previous post if you are staying more than one day in Taipei. A little day trip suggestion and the trendiest neighborhoods of the city.

We visited Jiufen, the inspiration town for Miyazaki's Spirited Away. You'll start right where Spirited Away begins. The streets are so narrow and the buildings are so close to each other that low light makes it to the inside. The most famous street is Jiufen Old Street. Lighted with magnificent red lamps, Jiufen is packed with countless food stalls serving all dishes that appear in Spirited Away! (taro balls, Taiwanese sausages, glutinous rice cakes, savory vegetables, red beans, oyster mushrooms and translucent flesh waste, better known as the slimy doughs from Chihiro's father). They say it is often cloudy and it is difficult to see the coast. We were lucky and we could enjoy its incredible and mysterious views.

To get there you have to take the 1062 bus that leaves from Zhongxiao Fuxing tube station (Exit 1). The price is $ 90 one way. Bring the exact fare because the driver doesn't have change. The trip takes about an hour and you can visit Jiufen in 2 hours. Don't forget to try the famous taro balls. You won't like all of them, but it's fun! The colored ones and the round black ones were our favorites.

Neighborhoods we visited in Taipei:

1. Area of Zhongshan [Metro: Zhongshan]: here you will find small business by young local entrepreneurs (shops, cafes, restaurants, art galleries). Buy here your souvenirs created by Taiwanese designers. You can also enjoy original artworks in the street like this robot installation that lets you connect music from your phone via Bluetooth and listen to it through the robots. Rest in the cafeteria of SPOT Film House, a theater in a former American Embassy.

Barrios que visitamos en Taipei:

2. Beimen tube's underground galleries: here we discovered the most frikie area of Taipei, countless people dressed as manga characters, samurais, geishas, etc. All under a cloud of smoke by different food stalls, dominated by the unmistakable aroma of Stinky Tofu (which, unfortunately, didn't try).

3. Ximending [Metro: Ximen]: the trendy area among young people. Come in the afternoon to discover it in all its glory. You'll find thousands of shops, lively cafes and lots of people. We ate at Belle Epoque, recommended if you are craving for western food :)

4. Da-an district [Metro: Zhongxiao Dunhua]: You can't miss the VVG Bistro cafeteria and taste it's original chocolate cake with marshmallows. In front of VVG you'll find another small jewel of the city, VVG Something, a charmy, tiny second hand bookstore. In this area you'll see a lot of young designers stores. On the main street (where you leave the metro) you will find big international brands.

5. Xinyi district [Metro: World Trade Center]: here you can see the Taipei 101 tower, one of the tallest towers in the world with 508m high and 101 floors (hence the name). Taipei 101 is considered one of the safest skyscrapers ever built as it stands in one of the regions with more earthquakes and hurricanes worldwide. The high of 101 flats commemorates the renewal of time: the new century came when he was under construction (100 + 1). It symbolizes the high ideals derived from one go beyond 100, a number traditionally associated with perfection. Certainly, you have to eat at one of the most famous restaurants in Taiwan: Din Tai Fung, known for its soup dumplings. Be prepared to wait, but well worth it! Another very popular site is the Ice-Monster, an ice cream cafe that we didn't have time to try :( but we were told it's a must! If you're a fan of Totoro, visit its store at ATT 4 Fun mall!
