La Vilella Baixa, a perfect weekend in the Priorat

Last weekend I celebrated my birthday with my friends in the best possible way, spending a few days in a house in a village eating calçots. There are few things that can make me happier than some days in the mountains with my friends cooking calçots! A few years ago I celebrated it in the same way. You can see it here.

This time we chose a house in the Priorat, a region of Catalonia where I had never been before and that I truly recommend. The Priorat is mostly famous for its wines. The wine that is produced has the denomination of origin (DOC) Priorat. It is one of the most appreciated wines in the world. The towns that are not DOC Priorat (Falset-Marsà, Capsanes, etc.) produce wine that is marketed with denomination of origin Montsant.

Our house was in one of the most beautiful villages of this area, La Vilella Baixa. We were really lucky because we arrived by chance. We were simply looking for a nice house for all of us that wasn't very expensive. And so we found La Persissada (you can see how wonderful it is here), nicknamed by my friend Gema, The Upper East Side. And so, we come to this town. Totally random. And, without doubt, it has been one of the great discoveries of this weekend.

The sharp slope of the hill where the old core is located has forced to build houses of seven or eight floors with the main entrance in the fourth or fifth floor. This gives the village its uniqueness. In his book Travel to the Priorat, the writer Josep M. Espinàs calls these houses the "New York skyscrapers of the Priorat." So we really think our house was called the Upper East Side and not the Perissada :)

From here you can make multiple excursions, both on foot and by car. You can visit the villages of Falset, Gratallops or the beautiful Siurana, which I will show you in a next post. Happy weekend!
