We visited these three beautiful fortified villages in a single day. We started with Colle di Val de'Elsa, followed by Volterra and ended up in San Gimigniano. All of them are about 30km away from each other. 30km of beautiful typical Tuscany landscapes and, yes, many curves that zigzag through its hills.
Visitamos estos tres preciosos pueblos fortificados en un solo día. Empezamos por Colle di Val de'Elsa, seguimos por Volterra y acabamos en San Gimigniano. Todos ellos distan unos 30km los unos de los otros. 30km de preciosos paisajes típicos de la Toscana y, eso sí, de muchas curvas que zigzaguean por sus colinas.
Colle di Val d'Elsa was a beautiful chance of destiny. We wanted to have breakfast in a Tuscan village on the way to Volterra and we stopped here. At the entrance to the village there is a delicious pastry-café that made us stop. Then we decided to walk down to breakfast and we found this charming town located in the heart of Tuscany. The perfect place to relive the medieval atmosphere characterized by fortifications, monuments and churches.
Colle di Val d'Elsa fue una preciosa casualidad del destino. Queríamos desayunar en un pueblito toscano de camino a Volterra y paramos aquí. En la entrada del pueblo hay una pastelería-cafetería deliciosa que nos hizo detenernos. Luego decidimos pasear para bajar el desayuno y nos encontramos con este encantador pueblo ubicado en el corazón de la Toscana. El lugar perfecto para revivir el ambiente medieval caracterizado por fortificaciones, monumentos e iglesias.
In the past, Colle di Val d'Elsa was a crossing point for pilgrims from all over Europe who were heading to Rome, as well as an important shopping center, in fact, is mostly known for its crystal glass production, so much so that it’s been nicknamed the Bohemia of Italy. But it also offers great views of Tuscany, a medieval atmosphere, nice restaurants and a beautiful Duomo. The city has two parts: the old historical center on the top of the hill and the newer part below.
En el pasado, Colle di Val d'Elsa era un punto de cruce para peregrinos de toda Europa que se dirigían a Roma, así como un importante centro comercial, de hecho, es sobre todo conocida por su producción de cristal, tanto que ha sido apodada la Bohemia de Italia. Pero también ofrece excelentes vistas de la Toscana, ambiente medieval, buenos restaurantes y un hermoso Duomo. La ciudad tiene dos partes: el antiguo centro histórico en la cima de la colina y la parte nueva más abajo.
From here we went to Volterra, considered a living sanctuary of architecture and art of the various Etruscan, Roman, Medieval and Renaissance periods. Located at a height of 403 meters, Volterra is surrounded by a solid circle of walls. Volterra is also known for having been the scene of one of the films of the Twilight saga, New Moon. Without a doubt, my favorite of the three cities of today and of this trip. Here we ate delicious paninis from La Sosta del Priore sitting in the wonderful Piazza dei Priori before continuing towards San Gimigniano.
De aquí nos dirigimos a Volterra, considerada un santuario viviente de la arquitectura y del arte de los distintos períodos etruscos, romanos, medievales y renacentistas. Situada a una altura de 403 metros, Volterra está rodeada por un sólido círculo de murallas. Volterra es también conocida por haber sido escenario de una de las películas de la saga Crepúsculo, Luna Nueva. Sin duda, mi favorita de las tres ciudades de hoy y de este viaje. Aquí comimos unos deliciosos paninos de La Sosta del Priore sentados en la maravillosa Piazza dei Priori antes de seguir hacia San Gimigniano.
San Gimigniano is very famous mainly for its medieval architecture, especially its towers. The "historic center of San Gimignano" has been declared a World Heritage Site. In the Tuscan villages of medieval times, wealthy families competed with each other for the erection of taller towers, which symbolized more power and wealth, and at the same time the towers served as hostels and fortresses. San Gimignano has managed to preserve about 15 of its 72 towers of different heights that have become its international symbol.
San Gimigniano es muy famoso principalmente por su arquitectura medieval, especialmente sus torres. El «centro histórico de San Gimignano» ha sido declarado Patrimonio de la Humanidad. En los pueblos toscanos de la época medieval, las familias adineradas competían entre sí por la erección de torres más altas, que simbolizaba más poder y riqueza, y a la vez las torres servían como hostales y fortalezas. San Gimignano ha logrado conservar cerca de 15 de sus 72 torres de diferentes alturas que se han convertido en su símbolo internacional.
