Tropico by Lana del Rey

"I saw the best minds of my generation destroyed by madness." 

Today was the release of the awaited short film Tropico by Lana del Rey! Lana, the singer which name can't be pronounced without the surname, because it loses its charm, the singer with most detractors and defenders, the lady that caught my senses the first second I heard her. I'm not a fan, but  her deep voice, visual language, languid look and the fragility that conveys inspires me and gets me melancholich.  Winter sadness, summer sadness... the kind of melancholy that makes you smile in the darkness.

Hoy se ha estrenado el esperadísimo nuevo videoclip de Lana del Rey, Tropico (quería simplemente escribir Lana, pero qué es Lana sin del Rey?). Sé que tiene muchos detractores (y otros tanto admiradores incondicionales) pero a mi Lana me gustó de inmediato. Su lenguaje visual, su voz grave, su mirada lánguida y la fragilidad que transmite conforman un mundo que me inspira y me pone melancólica. Melancolía de invierno, melancolía de verano, esa melancolía que te hace sonreír en la oscuridad.

It's been a long road to Tropico, peppered with trailers, sneak peeks and lots of little hints from Lana Del Rey herself. But, finally, yesterday, directed by Anthony Mendler (Ride, National Anthem) and co-starring model Shaun Ross, the 30-minute video premiered last night in LA. You may know Shaun Ross for being the first albino model. He has also modeled for Alexander McQueen and Givenchy and starred at Beyoncé's and Katy Perry's (among others) videos.

Tras varios meses de espera donde ibamos viendo fotos del rodaje, declaraciones de Lana y varios teasers, ayer se estrenaba el nuevo corto Trópico dirigido por Anthony Mandler (Ride, National Anthem) y co-protagonizado por el modelo Shaun Ross, más conocido por ser el primer modelo albino y por haber desfilado para Alexander McQueen y Givenchy. Seguro que te suena porque ha aparecido también en videoclips de estrellas como Beyoncé o Katy Perry.

The film set these 3 songs: Body Electric, Bel Air, Gods and Monsters and reminds me slightly of one of my favorite movies: Baz Luhrmann's Romeo + Juliet. The colors, the atmosphere, a movie told with the language of a video clip, visually stunning, kitsch, lively and  with modern imagery. I DEFINITELY like Tropico despite some cliché and obviousness. El corto está compuesto de tres temas: Body Electric, Bel Air, Gods and Monsters. Toda la estética y forma narrativa del video me recuerdan a una de mis películas favoritas: Romeo + Juliet de Baz Luhrmann. Un lenguaje visual parecido, sorprendente, kitsch, trepidante, con un imaginario moderno y narrado en formato videoclip. DEFINITIVAMENTE, Tropico me ha gustado muy a pesar de algunos clichés y obviedades prescindibles. Que os ha parecido a vosotros?
