10 days in Greece: Santorini

Hi everyone! We returned a few weeks ago from our trip to Greece, but with the beginning of the festival season I haven't had time to explain about it in the blog. I really wanted to bring you this post, the first of several about our trip through Greece, where we spent 10 days. Today I will tell you the route we did and everything about Santorini, one of its most famous islands.

Our tour consisted of 10 days visiting:
- Santorini (2 nights), arriving by plane from Barcelona.
- Milos (4 nights), arriving by boat from Santorini. Villages and Beaches
Meteora (2 nights) driving by car from Athens.
Athens (2 nights) driving by car from Meteora.

Nuestra ruta consistió en 10 días visitando:
- Santorini (2 noches), llegando en avión desde Barcelona.
- Milos (4 noches), llegando en barco desde Santorini. Pueblos y playas.

We all have our idea of Santorini of white houses and blue domes on a turquoise and crystalline sea. And the truth is that it is so, somehow. But it lacks of authenticity. I really wanted to get to know the island, but I was quite disappointed. I found an amusement park for tourists built on a very good marketing. We stayed in Galatia Villas, simple but cozy and located in a very quiet area of Fira.

We stayed in Fira because we read that it was where there was more ambience. There is ambience. Lots, but all tourists. I didn't really like Fira. In my opinion is not worth it. It was full of tourist attractions, people and very little of Greek culture. Anyway, I think it's a good place to stay if you have a tight budget. It's very central, very well connected with the port and the airport, and all buses depart from there everywhere in the island. On the other hand, the accommodation is cheaper than in places like Oia, and the restaurants and shops as well.

From Fira we did a 3 hours walk to Oia. A super recommendable route that allows you to see all the villages that are built on the edge of the precipice of the caldera of the volcano: Firostefani, Imerovigli and finally Ia (Oia). Definitely what we liked most. It's a relatively simple walk but it include some climbs that, especially if it is hot, will leave you breathless.

We loved Oia. It's a beautiful village, just as you imagine Santorini. Full of white houses, hotels at the edge of the cliff with its blue pools and blue domed churches. But it is still a tourist town where there are only luxury accommodations and the shops have very high prices. The only restaurant we found with local prices was Alkiona restaurant, just at the entrance of the village. Delicious, well priced and totally recommended. Their pig gyros is to die for!

If you have also been in Santorini, I would love to hear your opinion. I wish you a happy week and I will publish soon all about our next destination, Milos.

  1. We are heading there on a cruise in the next two weeks, were the cruise ships docked from Fira or Oia? I am so looking forward to visiting, only have a day to explore but hope we are not disappointed too! #feetdotravel

  2. We decided to stay in Oia when we went and actually found a reasonably priced AirBnB on the main oath fight by the castle. Having a kitchen and rooftop balcony also meant we could eat and drink and home which saved us a tonne of money.
You look a lot more relaxed after your Hike between the town's than we did when we did it - I'm impressed!
Awesome photos of the whole island, I can't wait to read your next post about Milos. It's high on our list of Greek islands to visit!

  4. Great photos! I agree with you about Fira, we stayed on the other side of the island near Kamari and hired a car and found some gorgeous little villages. Oia is spectacular perched on the cliff, think it would be interesting place to visit out of season with less tourists, however we still had a great time, glad you did too!
