48h in Riyadh. Saudi Arabia

In these difficult times, where many of us are confined at home because of coronavirus crisis, I bring you a post about my last trip to Saudi Arabia before all this exploded. I hope it entertains you a bit and I take this opportunity to send you lots of encouragement from here. #stayhome.

#mequedoencasa.

From Kuwait we traveled to Saudi Arabia, where we spent 48 hours in its capital, Riyadh. Of the three Middle Eastern destinations we visited, this was the one I was most excited about. The most exotic and culturally different destination from anything I've known so far. A country where, to this day, most human rights and fundamental freedoms are prohibited or seriously restricted, where homosexuals are sentenced to death or where the right to women's suffrage was not recognized until 2011. Furthermore, Saudi Arabia it remains the only Muslim country to have ever held an election.

In the capital, you could breathe a little openness, people without the hijab (veil that covers the head and chest that Muslim women should wear since they have their first menstruation, in the presence of adult males who are not from their family immediate) or the abaya (a long tunic down to the feet, which is placed over the woman's clothing). We were even able to have a drink on a terrace (before women were forbidden to do this). When we asked the locals, they told us about Saudi Arabia's 2030 vision, a plan to reduce the country's dependence on oil, diversify its economy and develop public service sectors such as health, education, infrastructure, recreation and tourism. Since last year, Saudi women had started to work, allowed themselves to listen to music, and held the country's first music festival. There were optimistic people with these small advances, although also many other quite skeptical. Among these opening measures is the facility to obtain a visa online and in less than 24 hours. The price of the visa is approximately € 115 and includes medical insurance.

Riyadh is a capital of great contrasts, where one can glimpse a piece of skyscraper with more than 100 floors, while eating a daal of € 1 in one of those restaurants where the Bengali working class goes. We stayed in the financial center of the city, Aloft Riyadh, Al Olaya District. Here we also moved around the city with Uber, since taxis only accepted cash. Traffic is quite intense throughout the city, so always calculate at least 20 minutes for each trip. As in most of the gulf countries, its inhabitants spend most of their free time in shopping malls, mainly because most of the entertainment is prohibited and due to the high temperatures they can reach. But there are things to visit. On our first day we visited the Masmak fortress, in the heart of the old town, it is one of the many characteristic mud fortresses of the Gulf, but this one is particularly large. It has a museum inside with free entrance. Next to it you can find Deera Square, better known among foreigners as Chop Chop Square, because this is where the condemned are publicly executed and where remains of dried blood can still be seen.

The second day we went to see the ruins of Ad Diriyah. These perfectly restored adobe ruins were home to the first Saudi State, established in 1744. They currently house several museums, as well as events and activities. In fact, the day we went they were closed to the public for a private event, but from the surroundings we could see a bit. Afterwards we had lunch at Alkofeia restaurant, located in one of the liveliest streets in the city, Tahlia. This restaurant serves delicious Palestinian food and has a super nice terrace with a lot of local atmosphere.

Finally, we visit the famous Kingdom Tower. With a height of 302 meters it is the fifth highest in the country. The tower has a total area of 185,000 m². It has 45 floors and its construction was done by the Bechtel corporation, which was completed in 2002. Its unique position makes it one of the most important attraction points in Riyadh. The trip to the SkyBridge passes through two elevators, with the first taking 50 seconds to reach the height of 180 meters to the intermediate level, and the second taking less than 40 seconds to reach your final destination, the Sky Bridge. Its views are amazing and allow you to have a global vision of the city and its incessant process of change. The price to go up is SR60 (about € 15).

I hope you found it interesting and that I managed to entertain you a bit on these rare days. Kisses to everyone!
