Shirahama, Japanese Benidorm...

__In our quest to discover the rural Japan, we came across this atypical city in any routes through the country of the rising sun, Shirahama. After visiting Koyasan, we decided to delve a little deeper into the peninsula of Wakayama trying to reach Kumano Kodo, the Japanese St James' Way.  However, communications with public transport are very complicated and the only feasible destination was Shirahama. A town that has anything rural but the province in which it is.

After staying in different Ryokans throughout the trip, we decided to book for this evening a more upscale hotel with spa to relax in a rural setting where there wasn't much more to do. Shirahama is known for its hot springs (onsen), scattered throughout the city and we decided to stay at a hotel with its own onsen: Kisyu Shirahama Onsen Musashi.

__If you click the link above you will see the photos of the hotel. It really looks wonderful, but it turned out to be a rather depressing, full of older people, with dated decor and a poor service one. For a moment we thought we were at a hotel in Benidorm with a group of IMSERSO (the institute for the elderly and social services). Furthermore, the thermal waters had divided spaces for women and men, so we had to enjoy alone, naked and with the feeling of being watched by thousands of Japanese ...

Anyway, we decided to take the train to Osaka first thing in the morning and go back to the civilization! Unfortunately, a sudden storm brought several delays on trains and it took us three hours longer than expected ... But being back to the civilization was enough reward!

___I must say that, despite everything, I really liked the experience. I love to discover such places that seam to be stuck in the past and with that decadent halo that makes them unique. On the other hand, the beach with Christmas decorations and the whitest sand I have ever seen, seemed cool! It is also curious to enjoy outdoor hot springs that you find scattered throughout the city! All very curious.

Happy saturday!
