Otranto's Blue...

The sea of Otranto was one of the most idyllic settings of the trip. After two intense days of walking and visiting beaches, we decided that the third day would be more relaxed. We just wanted to enjoy any beach of the Adriatic Sea. In fact, we chose the beach using google earth. We just zoom off areas of the coast of Otranto where the blue of the water stand out in a special way. This way we found Atlantis, our favorite beach of the trip!

After that, we went to Otranto, a historic seaside town and port on the Adriatic coast . It's a small place with the picture-perfect blue waters, white buildings and diving rocks. On a clear day it is possible to see over the Strait of Otranto to Albania.

Like much of Puglia, Otranto has a colourful and mixed past. It was important as a Greek and then Roman port. Later it was ruled by the Byzantines, the Normans and the Aragonese. In 1480 the town was invaded by Turks, and 800 locals were executed for refusing to convert to Islam. The bones and skulls of the martyrs of Otranto are now stacked behind glass in the cathedral.

Otranto has become quite a tourist town (its beauty is well worth it) and therefore eat options are fairly expensive and touristics. We opted to try the traditional Puccia, a sandwich made of pizza dough stuffed with whatever you want and baked. Something simple, tasty and not very expensive (about € 4/5).
